Neurons are specialized cells within nervous system that convey signals that combine to create thinking, movement, emotions, even our personality and practically everything we do
0:12
In the last video we discussed about the classification of neurons based on structure
0:17
In this video let us understand the classification of neurons based on the function
0:24
Neurons are classified into sensory neuron, motor neuron and interneuron. This is a sensory neuron that receives signals from sensory receptors like skin receptors
0:35
Then this information is passed on to interneuron. Interneuron acts as a middleman between the
0:40
sensory neuron and this motor neuron and interneuron transfer this signal to motor neuron
0:46
Motor neuron is involved in our body movements or regulating body movements
0:51
Now let us begin with sensory neuron. Sensory neuron are the neurons that detect stimuli from
0:58
the environment such as light, sound, touch etc. They transmit this information to the central
1:05
nervous system. Often these neurons have long dendrites that extends from the cell body to
1:12
receive signals from sensory receptors like skin receptors and these signals are then transmitted
1:18
to central nervous system along the axon sensory neurons are further classified
1:23
into different types based on the type of information they collect for example
1:28
visual neurons touch neurons auditory neurons etc now moving to the second
1:34
type that is a motor neuron as the term indicates motor neuron controls the movement of muscles and other organs of the body It is controlling the body movement Often these neurons have long axons that extend from the cell body to the muscles
1:51
The signals from the motor neuron causes the muscles to contract that results in movement
1:57
Motor neurons can also be classified into two types, upper motor neurons and lower motor neurons
2:04
upper motor neurons are located in the brain and they send signals to the lower motor neurons in
2:10
the spinal cord lower motor neurons then send signals to the muscles leading to movement or
2:17
movement of muscles by contraction or relaxation of muscles and the final one is the interneuron
2:24
interneuron is a neuron that connects sensory neurons and motor neurons they are the most
2:30
common type of neuron in central nervous system. They connect sensory neurons and motor neurons
2:35
and also connect different areas of central nervous system. They act as a middleman between
2:41
sensory and motor neurons and connect to other interneurons allowing them to communicate with
2:47
each other. The primary function of interneuron is integration or carrying sensory information
2:53
and regulating motor activity. It has different functions including learning, memory and decision
3:00
making. So interneurons are neurons that connects sensory neurons and motor neurons thereby helping
3:07
to process information and coordinate the activity of different parts of the nervous system. So these
3:13
are the three types of neurons based on function. You can refer this video also neurons based on
